Effectiveness of load-level isolation system for pallet racking systems

Recent Italian earthquakes have shown the high seismic vulnerability of pallet racking systems. In down-aisle direction and in absence bracing systems, these structures are very flexible moment-resisting frames. Instead, cross-aisle they consist slender trusses, stiffened by various systems; latter, although necessary for lateral stability, attract significant accelerations, which can cause stored goods to fall, posing a threat human safety. To reduce this risk while increasing rack structural performance, some mitigation systems were proposed, based on specific base-isolation or dissipation devices. paper, an innovative passive control system is investigated, i.e., Load-Level Isolation System (LLIS), consists applying isolators load level movement pallets direction. The LLIS Tuned Mass Damper (TMD) strategy exploits payload structures. Among major uncertainties amount isolated mass its position within structure. Therefore, case study rack, parameters (isolation stiffness damping ratio) optimized arrangements system, considering cases with one two levels. applied optimization procedure extension classical TMD approaches. effectiveness LLISs then investigated through bidirectional Time-History analyses 3D Finite Element models. results show that using LLIS, even single load-level, greatly upright stresses displacements optimal upper part rack.
